Town of Stowe

Ice Arena

Summary

Bread Loaf planned, designed and constructed a new 35,000 square foot ice arena for the Town of Stowe, Vermont. The four-season arena replaced the town’s old open-air skating facility, and added new locker rooms, a full snack bar, an activity room, and expanded parking. During summer months the facility will be used for indoor sports, with artificial turf, and will also allow the Town to host musical events and other activities such as their annual Oktoberfest.

Bread Loaf provided an energy efficient insulated metal panel envelope with a pre-engineered structure, and added custom exterior finishes, suspended canopies, and expanded glazing to add visual interest. The ice refrigeration system incorporates state-of-the art equipment to conserve energy, reclaim waste heat, and utilize the reclaimed waste heat for building heating and an exterior walkway snow-melt system.

The site presented significant challenges due to existing slopes, wetlands and ledge conditions. Access to the site during construction was also challenging requiring that traffic control and safety measures be coordination with an active elementary school and busy recreation park. Despite these challenges, the project was completed on time and within budget.
